The Virtual Health Library (VHL) is an initiative by Brazil-based BIREME, the Latinoamerican and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information, which provides access to a rich collection of sources and scientific literature in health related issues produced in the region and Spain. The information sources are generated, updated, stored, and manipulated on the Internet by producers, integrators, and intermediaries, in a decentralized manner using common methodologies for their integration into the Virtual Health Library. Resources can be searched by thematic criteria within the health sciences, or by browsing national initiatives in member countries as well as regional projects. Besides this scientific literarure, the portal houses a health information locator, directories of institutions and events in the region, health glossaries, a technological observatory, and links to health scientific communication indicators and links to other like minded initiative, both within the region and elsewhere. All the resources are freely available and are mostly in Spanish and Portuguese.
