Today the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) includes 6410 journals from 111 countries in more than 50 languages.  2793 journals are providing metadata on article level, which means that 554412 articles are searchable from DOAJ.

Last year DOAJ organised training for the EIFL network on how to make this useful resource more comprehensive by including all open access scientific and scholarly journals that use a quality control system to guarantee the content.

New journals were added to DOAJ in 2010-2011 from EIFL partner countries:

  • 43 new journals were added from Serbia (205% increase);
  • 33 new journals were added from Egypt (750% increase);
  • 16 new journals were added from Poland (31% increase);
  • 12 new journals were added from China (150% increase);
  • Nine new journals were added from Russia (73% increase);
  • Eight new journals were added from Lithuania (75% increase);
  • Seven new journals were added from Slovenia (40% increase);
  • Six new journals were added from Nigeria (38% increase);
  • Five new journals were added from Thailand (100% increase);
  • Four new journals were added from Nepal (80% increase);
  • Three new journals were added from Azerbaijan (300% increase), Ethiopia (300% increase), Kenya (100% increase) and Macedonia (75% increase);
  • Two new journals were added from Bosnia and Herzegovina (120% increase) and Ukraine (13% increase);
  • One new journal was added from Armenia (50% increase), Belarus (100% increase), Estonia (22% increase), Ghana (100% increase), Kosova (100% increase) and Moldova (100% increase).

DOAJ has made some graphic changes and also a slightly different structure, all in purpose to make it easier for our DOAJ users. The aim has been to make it simple, without plugins and heavy pictures, to keep DOAJ usable in areas with low bandwidth.
