OpenAIRE (Open Access Infrastructure for Research in Europe), an EC-funded project, launched the OpenAIRE infrastructure and presented the first results of the project at the University of Ghent, Belgium today, December 2, 2010. Since December 1, 2009, EIFL has participated in the OpenAIRE project along with 37 other partners covering almost all 27 European Union member states and one associated state (Norway). This network supports the researchers towards meeting the demands of the EC-OA mandate and carries out the liaisons with other open access activities in Europe to achieve widespread adoption of open access policies. EIFL coordinates activities in 10 Eastern European countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.
At the launch event, the European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes discussed the transformative role of open access to scientific information and the key role that OpenAIRE will play in providing broader access to publicly funded research results. Read the entire speech.
