EIFL update

Uganda joins as an EIFL partner country
The Consortium of Uganda University Libraries (CUUL), formed in 2001, currently has 24 members which include: public and private university libraries; research institute libraries; government parastatal bodies and other special libraries.
Smart and innovative – public libraries for development
EIFL Spotlight: Through the EIFL-PLIP programme, twelve public libraries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America were awarded grants in 2010 to create innovative services using technology to enhance everyday lives in response to an identified community need. Republic of the Maldives joins EIFL as a partner country
The National Library of the Maldives, representing the library community, has taken the lead on joining EIFL.

EIFL-OA update

The winners of EIFL call for proposals: Open access advocacy campaigns
EIFL supported 11 national and institutional OA advocacy campaigns to reach out to research communities: 5 in Africa (Botswana, Ghana, Malawi, Sudan, Zimbabwe) and 6 in Europe (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Ukraine). Among them 7 are national campaigns (Botswana, Estonia, Ghana, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Ukraine) and 4 – institutional (Latvia, Malawi, Sudan, Zimbabwe).
Open Access and Digital Libraries workshop in Laos
On March 21-25, 2011, Central Library, National University of Laos (NUOL), hosted a workshop Open Access and Digital Libraries using DSpace Software organised by Laos Library and Information Consortium (LALIC), NUOL and EIFL and funded by UNESCO and EIFL.
Open access publishing in Lithuania and Serbia
EIFL supported OA publishing initiatives in Lithuania and Serbia: implementing Open Journal System, a project of the Association of Lithuanian Serials and Lithuanian Research Libraries Consortium; and Exploring article processing charges model, a project of the Centre for Evaluation in Education and Science, National Library in cooperation with the Ministry of Science, universities and journals.

EIFL-IP update

EIFL librarians contribute to Consumers International IP Watchlist 2011
Most of the new reports in the 2011 Consumers International IP Watchlist came from EIFL-IP librarians and colleagues.
Draft Treaty on Copyright Exceptions and Limitations for Libraries and Archives released
After wide consultation with librarians, representatives of Member States and other knowledgeable individuals, a draft Treaty on Copyright Exceptions and Limitations for Libraries and Archives has been released.

EIFL-FOSS update

CUFTS/GODOT: helping library users discover e-resources
The EIFL-FOSS March Themed Week focused on CUFTS/GODOT -- a FOSS tool that helps end-users to easily discover and access e-resources and librarians to effectively manage their e-resource collections.
Faceted Search: more effective and efficient searching for library users
April EIFL-FOSS Themed Week focused on faceted searching. The online workshop included a general overview of the topic and a hands-on introduction to Apache Solr.

EIFL-PLIP update

Deadline 30 June - Call for PLIP grant proposals!
EIFL-PLIP announces call for concept papers from public libraries in countries with emerging and developing economies. The deadline is 30th June 2011. Twenty small grants of up to $15000 [USD] each will be awarded at the end of October 2011 for work to be done during the following 12 months.
Prime Minister praises Lithuania library's PLIP project
Lithuania's Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius learned more about the educational computer game, Iššūkis (The Challenge) during his visit to the Utena A. and M. Miskiniai Public Library. The game was developed with EIFL-PLIP support and is part of the library's Play to Study project, which aims to encourage reluctant children to go back to school.

Kyrgyzstan Library Information Consortium co-organise round table on copyright in the electronic environment
Building good relations with the national copyright office was one of the outcomes for the roundtable co-organised by Kyrgyzstan Libraries Information Consortium (KLIC).
Macedonia Electronic Libraries at International Book Fair
Macedonia national consortium, Macedonia Electronic Libraries (MEL), participated in the 23rd International Book Fair, in Skopje. They showcased their activities including library online services and access to commercial e-resources.
