EIFL-OA update

Ghana: The first results of OA advocacy campaigns
The Association of African Universities, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Ghana and the Royal Tropical Institute of the Netherlands organized an International Advocacy Seminar on Institutional Repositories on July 18–19, 2011 in Accra, Ghana with financial assistance from EIFL.
Capacity building for OA repository administrators and managers: EIFL-OA – KIT – COAR online workshop
Over 55 participants, from African, Asia and Europe attended the free online workshop to learn about creating and managing open access repository.
Sudan: Training on OA and DSpace for researchers and librarians
Open Access Scientific Institutional Repository Training Week took place 24-30 July at the University of Khartoum as a part of EIFL supported Open Access awareness raising campaign among researchers and librarians at the Faculty of Science, University of Khartoum.
Botswana: Stakeholders learn about OA repositories
On August 11 Botswana Library Consortium (BLC) organized a workshop on Open Access platforms/software and repositories at the University of Botswana. The event took place within EIFL-funded national open access advocacy campaign implemented by BLC and University of Botswana.

EIFL presents TLIB at IFLA 2011
TLIB, the draft international treaty on copyright exceptions and limitations for libraries and archives proposed by IFLA, EIFL, ICA and Corporacion Innovarte was presented at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress 2011.
Poster session Moldova - Advocacy for Fair Copyright Laws: the role of libraries
Mariana Harjevschi, EIFL-IP librarian with the consortium Resurse Electronice pentru Moldova (REM) in Moldova presented a poster at the 2011 IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Puerto Rico. The poster described how librarians in Moldova, a country in transition, succeeded by working together and building alliances with civil society to advocate for information for all.

EIFL-FOSS update

Koha - making the case for FOSS
Koha is a well-established FOSS library tool and several EIFL libraries are now using it. EIFL-FOSS held a Themed Week session focussing on Koha and library FOSS advocacy. The workshop featured contributions from people who shared information about advocating for FOSS tools, through their experiences with Koha.
Investigating mobile-phone access to libraries in Zimbabwe
Providing mobile access to library services is a vital way of increasing access to information and e-resources. Following the EIFL-FOSS Call for Participation, the University of Zimbabwe Library has begun to integrate the FOSS tool, MobileCat into their online library catalog.
EIFL-FOSS free, online workshops providing solutions
EIFL-FOSS Themed Weeks are providing a great opportunity for sharing expertise and experience; they have been attended by people from over 46 countries. The sessions are addressing the challenges and opportunities that digital libraries are facing.

PLIP results – libraries rise to the challenge
Impact assessment by PLIP’s first 12 grantee libraries – our pioneers – clearly demonstrate the will, talent and capacity of public libraries to design and implement sustainable community development services and to bring about positive change in their communities.
Six-country Africa Library Perception Study published
PLIP is pleased to announce publication of findings of groundbreaking research into perceptions of public libraries in six countries in Africa. PLIP commissioned the study to deepen understanding of the status and role of public libraries in Africa, and of the vision, aspirations and expectations of various stakeholders.

Mali doctoral students learn about access to e-resources
On August 13, 2011, Consortium Malien des Bibliothèques (COMBI) organized a workshop on access and use of e-resources (both commercial and open access). This workshop is among their activities planned to promote the usage of e-resources. Over 20 participants from faculties across the University of Bamako attended the workshop at the Bamako Francophone Digital Campus.
EIFL-Thailand Consortium seeks to broaden membership
At EIFL-Thailand’s recent presentation to over 60 institutions across Thailand, they focused on the support and benefits they can provide to a wide range of libraries and on the benefits of being an EIFL partner country.
