We’re raising funds for a project that is helping thousands of children attending under-resourced schools in poor and rural areas of Ghana to pass their Basic Education Certificate Exams (B.E.C.E.) and progress to secondary school.
Can you imagine learning about computers and the internet without ever touching a keyboard? This is the situation that thousands of children in Ghana face, where schools in underdeveloped rural areas do not have computers, internet connections or reliable electricity.
Without any real-life practical experience they fail their information and communications technology (ICT) exams. Children from poor families who fail the B.E.C.E. often drop out and face uncertain futures because their parents cannot afford to keep them in school.
MOBILE LIBRARIES TO THE RESCUE!
With support from EIFL, mobile libraries in four regions of Ghana - Ashanti, Western, Upper East and Volta - have come up with a solution.
Every week since early 2015, library vans packed with solar-charged laptop computers, modem internet, screens, and projectors travel to 20 poor and rural schools to offer hands-on computer classes. The computers are loaded with content related to school subjects like geography, mathematics, science and English, as well as practice exam questions and other useful and fun learning tools.
Each van currently has 15 laptops - and so the children must still crowd around computers during lessons. As a result, not all can get the hands-on experience they so desperately need.
With your support, we will be able to help the mobile libraries buy more laptops and reach more children.
2017 EXAM RESULTS BRING JOY
Children, parents and teachers have been overjoyed with exam results achieved with the help of the project - especially success in the B.E.C.E.
In 2017, the project contributed to an 81% pass rate in the ICT exam at B.E.C.E. level at 17 schools in the four regions. This is a remarkable 36% more than in 2015, when the project started.
These impressive results are a tribute to our donors!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
