Dear Sandraghassen and other colleagues,

It's great to see that Greenstone is alive and well in Mauritius.

Concerning the question of hosting, I refer to my message of last year
(copy below) in which I transmitted the offer of Pier Luigi Rossi of IRD
in France to host Greenstone collections from developing countries. As
you will see from the site http://www.beep.ird.fr there are now 10
collections hosted on Beep. For now they are only in French, but users
can get the English interface by changing the Preferences or by
accessing at http://www.beep.ird.fr/cgi-bin/library.cgi?a=p&p=home&l=en
. This could be a very useful solution, at least in the short or medium
terms, for those who have difficulties in finding an appropriate hosting
arrangement for their collection(s). Those of you who are interested
could contact Luigi who is copied here (I'm sure we could convince him
to add an English translation of the Beep home page).

Best regards, John Rose of Greenstone Team

Please find below at bottom a message sent by Pier Luigi Rossi to
French-speaking Greenstone lists with my translation above it. Luigi
informs that the new Beep server is open to collections in ALL
LANGUAGES, but that it is intended for the diffusion of SCIENTIFIC AND
TECHNICAL INFORMATION [as opposed to, for example, cultural works,
administrative/legal information or news] which would not otherwise be
available because of local hosting obstacles.

Let's thank Luigi and IRD for this very timely and helpful offer,

		John Rose of Greenstone Team

"Dear Colleagues,

IRD (Institut de recherche pour le développement) (www.ird.fr) carries
out activities in research, expert advice, training and
knowledge-sharing to support countries which consider science and
technology as one of the foundations for their development.

One of the difficulties which they encounter is to make their available
digital documents accessible on the internet. This is often caused by
the complexity of negotiations with the teams which manage computer
communication networks, a lack of servers, poor internet connectivity, etc.

Being unable to provide an effective solution to all of your obstacles,
we propose a solution to attempt to overcome them in the short and
medium terms.

We have set up a Greenstone server with excellent internet connectivity.
It can host your collections in a cooperative, shared environment.

Connect to the server at www.beep.ird.fr
beep = digital libraries in partnership (in French: bibliothèques
électroniques en partenariat)

We propose to develop mechanisms to ensure the greatest visibility for
your files, notably by promoting their indexing by the main search
engines and by providing gateways through the OAI protocol.

We will also be in position to provide you with timely statistics on the
consultation of your files hosted on the server.

For storage of your collections, we offer a space of 10 GB accessible by
ftp.

For all questions and to promote and exploit your production, don't
hesitate to contact me and to redistribute this message to other colleagues.

Looking forward to working together to add value to your scientific
production.
