AEGIS-OA (Activate European Guidance and Incentives for Sustainable Open Access publishing), a project funded by the EU under the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, kicked off on 19-20 March 2026 in Brussels.
EIFL is one of 24 organizations from 16 European countries partnering in the AEGIS-OA project, which brings together a diverse range of research-performing organizations, service providers, and National Capacity Centres with expertise in institutional publishing, Diamond open access, and open science.
A primary aim of the AEGIS-OA project is to establish a transparent, sustainable, and high-quality open access scholarly publishing ecosystem in Europe by leveraging and expanding the services of the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH), which are currently focused on journals, to include Diamond open access books. EIFL oversees the EDCH Resources and Guidelines service.
The EDCH was developed through past EU-funded projects, including ‘Developing Institutional Open Access Publishing Models to Advance Scholarly Communication’ (DIAMAS), where EIFL was a partner.
The AEGIS-OA project will -
- Extend quality & standards: Extending the Diamond Open Access Standard (DOAS) to books and creating a certification framework.
- Support skills & training: Developing training programmes for publishing professionals and upskilling trainers across the European Research Area (ERA).
- Build tools & technology: Enhancing the Diamond Discovery Hub (DDH) and providing ready-to-use publishing tools like an EDCH-aligned Open Journal Systems (OJS) package.
- Focus on sustainability: Coordinating national funding mechanisms and National Capacity Centres (NCCs) to ensure long-term stability for Diamond open access.
