Many librarians, researchers and teachers in Kenya do not know about the provisions of the Copyright Act with respect to fair dealing and other exceptions, and how to utilize the exceptions in the course of their work. In February 2022, EIFL and our partner, the Kenya Libraries and Information Services Consortium (KLISC), co-organized a webinar (2 hours) with the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) to discuss these issues.

The webinar raised awareness of fair dealing and other exceptions in the Kenya Copyright Act, identified challenges among the library community in using these provisions, and took a look at developments in the region (Nigeria) as well as the evolution of fair dealing internationally.

The expert speakers were Denise Nicholson, Scholarly Communications and Copyright Consultant; Jonathan Band, Copyright Attorney; Prof. Joseph M. Kavulya KLISC Chair, University Librarian, Chuka University; Dr Desmond Oriakhogba, University of Venda, and Paul Kaindo, KECOBO. The webinar was introduced by Mr Edward Sigei, Executive Director, KECOBO and moderated by Ms Janegrace Kinyanjui, Vicechair KLISC, University Librarian, Egerton University and EIFL Copyright Coordinator in Kenya.
