EIFL Open Access Programme Manager Iryna Kuchma will launch the Open access campaign in Zambia – a new six-month project with the Zambia Library Consortium (ZALICO) that will advocate for open access (OA) publishing and sharing in Zambia.

The project aims to increase OA uptake through OA policy formulation and to increase OA publishing activities to improve accessibility and visibility of research.

Institutional research managers, researchers and lecturers, students, librarians, journal editors and publishers from five ZALICO member institutions: University of Zambia (Zambia's largest university with over 24,834 students), Copperbelt University, National Science Technology Council, National Institute for Public Administration and Evelyn Hone College will meet to discuss

  • the role of OA in research, increasing visibility and impact of research output;
  • why should local content go OA and sharing good practice experience from OA journal – Medical Journal of Zambia;
  • research in today's digital environment and OA publishing;
  • OA institutional repository policies: experiences from The University of Zambia Research Repository Online, Copperbelt University Institutional Repository CBUSpace and (nstc.org.zm/about-zastin) The Zambia Science and Technology Information Network (ZaSTIN) at Zambia Science Technology Council;
  • how to design efficient open access policies;
  • current copyright trends in relation to OA;
  • planning OA campaign activities and OA advocacy resources (e.g. creating a blog for participants and any other persons interested in advocating for OA content to share experiences and discuss progress).
